St. Mary Church

History…

Located just north of downtown Allen in the Allen Heritage Village, St. Mary Church was built in 1887 and has withstood the test of time. The church was organized as an African-American Baptist congregation. It served continually as a house of worship until March 2001 and also served as a school until 1932. Through it all, the church has retained its unique historical character and charm.

And now…

St. Mary Church was donated to the Allen Heritage Guild in 1999 by the Reverend George Anderson. The restoration process began in 2001, and now everything has been lovingly preserved and meticulously restored to its original glory.

The church as you see it today is an interpretation of what it may have been like at the turn of the twentieth century. The church contains the original hardwood floors, green ceiling boards and choir rail. The blackboard on the back wall was originally used during the days when the church served as a school.

St. Mary is a lovely restored historic church located at 402 E. St. Mary Drive in Allen. A perfect setting for a small wedding or musical concert and church services. The church is fully heated and air conditioned, and seats about 75 comfortably. The gardens were recently completed with the help of the Allen Garden Club.
